FOOD


I'll start here with what I do know a lot about: losing weight.

I weighed 120 pounds until I was 34. They used to make fun of me for that in the Navy. I was riding my bike a lot and eating really good. Then I lost my good habits when I was on the streets. After I got off the streets, I got into cooking. My problem was that I didn't want to drink alcohol, so I thought that it would be nice to drink soda pop. I got carried away with that and gained a lot of weight.

In 2012, I weighed 185 pounds and was diagnosed with NAFLD (Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease). I was prescibed rapid weight loss by my doctor. I decided to do it by calorie reduction instead of exercise. I lost about 15 pounds doing the Joe Cross inspired juicing diet. I lost another 10 pounds doing a paleo diet. And then I lost another 15 pounds doing my prison diet of bread sandwiches (bread and mustard). It was hard work and took several years. I weighed in at 144 pounds today. I'm back to eating a good normal diet.

I could go on and on about what it was like dieting. I never thought that I would be overweight. I really screwed up the good habits I once had. I've recovered, but I'm not as healthy as I could have been.


This part is a little experimental, bear with me...

The food pyramid isn't just some whimsical suggestion. It is the ratio of the building blocks of human life. It isn't a law you have to live by.

We see organic food being sold. We know we can't support the population on organic principles. Nitrogen runoff is a problem. Organic food relies heavily on... You guessed it, manure. Where does that come from? Livestock in a barn? Are you a vegetarian also? Glueten free? Dairy abortions and baby chick killers?

A lot of my health problems came from drinking soda pop. It wasn't the pesicides on the produce. I don't want the high fructose corn syrup taken out of the soda; I'll just drink less. I can't roll back the clock. If you stay out of balance with the food pyramid for a prolonged amount of time, you'll start seeing negative effects. Some of those are not life threatening and you may choose that way of life. Others are life threatening.

I think having lower world population is key here. Eating less meat is key for environmental issues, but getting rid of it entirely on a massive scale doesn't add up.


I'm certainly not defending big agriculture here. The organic movement has roots. I don't have all the information, but I'm working on it. I have seen the downside of B12 deficiency. I've seen people live good food pyramid lives. I've cut way back on my meat intake. I eat some meat when I go to restaurants. I'll probably have some BBQ's this summer.

My aunt reminded me tonight how much I don't know about nutrition. There are a lot of different things that we get from food and it is hard to be perfect. We get set into liking the foods we eat and fall into some bad habits. It's wise to not fall into a routine of eating the same things all the time.
